Louis Tatta on the C++ Alliance: Mission, People, and How It Works
Louis Tatta gives an inside view of the C++ Alliance: where it came from, what it is for, and how it actually runs day to day.
Founded in 2017 as a nonprofit, the Alliance exists to improve C++ and to support the Boost libraries. It has grown from its early days to a team of ten on payroll and fourteen on contract. Louis talks about that growth, and about the working relationship at the center of it. The founder, Vinnie Falco, is his cousin, and the two have been building things together since childhood, from circuit boards then to the organization now. He describes his own role as helping to ground the ideas, keeping personal and professional life deliberately separate, and how they even moved closer to each other to make the work easier.
He explains the Alliance's approach to staffing and open source: rather than hiring newcomers, it brings on people who have already contributed, and gives them the financial footing to work on their libraries full-time. For many of them, he notes, the pull is giving back and helping others grow rather than the paycheck. He describes a distributed team spread across time zones, and how Slack, huddles, and video keep the environment personable enough that specialists in particular codebases can genuinely collaborate.
Looking at where things stand in 2026, Louis reflects on how differently the Alliance is seen now, as a stable presence in the C++ and Boost communities, and on where its focus is heading: teaching the next generation of C++ developers, and keeping the story of Boost centered on its people.
