The Secret to Great C++ Libraries? It’s the People
Vinnie Falco on Building C++ Libraries—and Relationships
Vinnie Falco reflects on learning his own limitations and growing into the person he needed to be, shaped by a difficult relationship with his parents and early independence, including how losing access to an Apple II pushed him to spend nights out meeting people. He says those survival skills didn’t translate cleanly into adulthood, where building relationships matters. At the C++ Alliance, he values being surrounded by great people, a nontraditional structure where advancement comes from producing work, and finding rare, trustworthy, honest hard workers. Falco describes software as fundamentally for people, driven by imagining users reading documentation and feeling joy when a library helps them succeed. He frames programming as a social phenomenon, contrasts technical styles like coroutines and senders, and says any story about Boost starts with the people.
