21 Years of Boost and Code That Can’t Fail

Ion Gaztañaga has been contributing to the Boost C++ Libraries for more than two decades — but his work with C++ goes far beyond open source.

Based in the Basque Country, Ion works in railway engineering, where software helps control train traction systems with precision measured in microseconds.

At speeds approaching 300 km/h, those systems aren’t abstract. Software directly affects how and when a train moves.

As Ion puts it:

“Software saves a lot of lives in those transport systems.”

His path into engineering wasn’t inevitable. Ion grew up in an athletic family and competed seriously in sport before choosing engineering — a decision that led him to C++.

Over the years, he also became deeply involved in Boost, contributing for 21 years and eventually taking on responsibilities within the C++ Alliance community.

For Ion, the attraction is still fundamentally the same: solving difficult problems, improving the tools developers depend on, and helping move the C++ ecosystem forward.
