Modernizing Boost.Graph for Science & Community

Libraries C++ Alliance | 6 min Posted on September 18, 2026

Arnaud Becheler is a geneticist and staff engineer at the C++ Alliance whose path into C++ began through computational biology.

His work involved modeling evolution, ancestry, and large-scale relationships between species using graph data structures. As those simulations grew more complex, C++ became the obvious choice for performance — and Boost.Graph Library became an essential tool.

But it also became clear to Arnaud that Boost.Graph could be better.

In May 2026, Arnaud helped organize the Boost Graph Modernization Workshop with Jeremy Murphy, bringing together users and contributors to share knowledge and help shape the library's future.

His ambition is straightforward: modernize Boost Graph into the library he wished he had when he first discovered it — and eventually use that foundation to support future work in genetics and scientific computing.

Along the way, Arnaud also reflects on something less technical but just as important: community. Working at the intersection of genetics, ecology, and C++ can be isolating. The C++ Alliance community gave him reassurance, support, and a sense of belonging — and helped inspire his shift from simply using open-source software to contributing back to it.
