More People Have Gone to Space Than a Library into Boost!
Glen Fernandes is a software engineer, Boost library author, and longtime open-source contributor. His path into Boost began while he was working at Microsoft, an era when the company actively discouraged open-source contributions.
Yet inside those same walls, Glen noticed something interesting: Developers were still choosing Boost.
That stuck with him.
In 2014, Glen created Boost.Align and eventually became the maintainer of multiple Boost libraries.
What kept him there wasn’t prestige or title.
It was the culture.
For Glen, Boost works because background doesn’t matter nearly as much as the code itself.
“Whatever your background is, it doesn’t affect the fact that you’re contributing C++ code to Boost. Nothing else should matter there.”
He also describes just how high the bar is for getting a library formally accepted into Boost:
“More people have gone to space than have gotten a library into Boost.”
Beyond the code itself, Glen talks about consensus, community governance, and how values like “don’t break the user” spread organically through a group of contributors who care deeply about getting things right.
