The Mathematician Racing the Clock at WG21
Meet Mungo Gill, a representative of the Irish National Body at the C++ ISO Standardization Committee and a member of the team at the C++ Alliance. Mungo's path to the standards room ran through pure mathematics, a love that started in school and carried him to university, and a first job researching fingerprint recognition. A recruiter's call during COVID led him to John Lakos and Bloomberg, where he learned what it takes to push C++ to perform. From there, John Lakos introduced him to Vinnie Falco, and Mungo joined the Alliance.
In this short testimonial, Mungo talks about that journey and the work he does now, helping the Alliance get proposal papers in front of WG21, often right up against the clock. We caught him in the final hours before the May mailing, the last paper publication before a committee meeting, with the deadline two hours out and the messages piling up. A look at the person behind the papers, and at how a mathematician from Ireland ended up helping shape the future of C++
