Why Trains Need C++: Ion Gaztañaga on Engineering, Boost & the C++ Alliance

Libraries C++ Alliance | 4 min Posted on June 23, 2026

Ion Gaztañaga has contributed to Boost for 21 years, but his path into C++ started on the court, not at a keyboard.

In this conversation, Ion traces his story: a childhood shaped by a professional-athlete father who pushed academics as hard as sport, a move into engineering for the Basque railway industry, and the realization that controlling traction systems in microseconds demands a language as efficient as C++. He explains why software now sits at the core of safe, reliable modern transportation.

He also reflects on what kept him coming back to open source, coding as an addictive puzzle, how a colleague drew him into the C++ Alliance, and why he joined after seeing the impact it had on Boost. Now part of the fiscal sponsorship committee, the self-described introvert shares his optimism for where the Alliance can take the language, the standardization process, and the compiler ecosystem, and how it lets him spend more time doing the work he loves.
